Kumasi Asante Kotoko management has responded to allegations of neglect towards the club members involved in the 2017 accident. The bus carrying the Kotoko team was involved in a fatal accident on July 12, 2017, when returning to Kumasi from Accra after a game against Inter Allies. The accident led to the death of Thomas Obeng Asare, the team’s deputy chief equipment’s officer, and several injuries to the playing body, including coach Steve Polack and his assistant Godwin Ablordey. Six years on, reports suggest that some victims of the accident have been neglected, with most of them living in dire health conditions.

In response to the reports, the management of Asante Kotoko, led by Nana Yaw Amponsah, has countered the allegations, stating that attempts to find a solution to support the victims have proven futile. However, the club has pledged to continue engaging the victims and producing a plan to alleviate their situation over the next few days. Management has taken notice of the disappointment expressed over the lack of support for the accident victims, and they are working towards finding a solution.

For the most part, the Board and Management of Asante Kotoko have been making efforts to provide support for the accident victims since assuming office in 2020. Unfortunately, all efforts to deal with the matter have been unsuccessful. Nonetheless, the club has reached out to representatives of the victims and will soon unveil a short to medium-term plan to help alleviate their situation.

The accident, which occurred in Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region, led to the team’s equipment manager’s death, while some officials and players sustained injuries. The team has since been making efforts to provide support to the accident victims, and it is commendable that management is taking steps to address the issue.
